sping

A sping (for spam ping ) is a ping sent from a splog (spam blog ) to make recipients think content of interest has been updated although that may not be the case. The intention is to lead users to the splog where they will be exposed to marketing or advertising content. Frequent spings to sites like technorati.com will cause a splog to appear quite active, raising its page ranking and therefore its visibility. According to various reports, 60-75% of all pings sent from blogs are actually spings.

Multiple pings sent over a short time from a legitimate blog, which are sometimes generated by improperly configured software, may also be termed spings.

In another context, sPing (also sometimes spelled all lower case) is used to refer to the ping of death .
