OneWebDay (OWD)

OneWebDay (OWD) is a celebration of the Internet's ability to foster communication, collaboration and participation. The first observance for this Internet holiday is today, September 22, 2006. According to the official Web site: "The mission of OneWebDay is to create, maintain, advance, and promote a global day to celebrate online life." The organizers encourage people to blog about what the Internet means to them and to upload pictures tagged "onewebday" to Webshots.com for a "giant global photo collage."

Susan Crawford, a professor at the Cardozo School of Law and board member of ICANN , came up with the idea for OneWebDay and wrote about it in her blog in 2005: "OneWebDay is not just about pictures. It's about action. We'll be encouraging global efforts to wire villages, connect schools, put up more hotspots, build collective online artworks, write and perform collective online music, show 'days on the web,' and many other barn-raising and creative and connecting projects. We will have a major offline component, with people telling stories about how the web has changed their lives, and showing each other special OneWebDay artifacts."

The 2006 OWD features events in cities around the world, including London, Boston, New York, Tokyo, Belgrade, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Burgundy and Milan. The holiday will also be celebrated within Second Life, the online 3-D virtual reality world where members interact as avatar s.
