sniper-sniffing robotA sniper-sniffing robot is a tactical mobile robot designed to seek out and identify weapons in congested areas. The autonomous machine is equipped with sophisticated navigation and stabilization systems that allow maneuverability in unusual or adverse environments. A sniper-sniffing robot incorporates multiple sensors such as: - Acoustic direction finders
- Electromagnetic direction finders
- Laser range finders
- Optical and infrared ( IR ) cameras
Optical and IR illumination devices facilitate operation in environments with little or no ambient light. A teleoperation system with a high- resolution display allows precision control by personnel at distant locations. Sniper-sniffing robots may navigate over earth, on water, under water or through the air. Several prototypes for airborne sniper-sniffing robots have been developed by private enterprises and individuals. They will be tested in August 2008 in a special competition hosted by the Ministry of Defence in England.
