interexchange carrier

An interexchange carrier (IXC) is a telephone company that provides connections between local exchange s in different geographic areas. IXCs provide inter LATA service as described in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 . They're commonly referred to as "long-distance carriers." IXCs include AT&T, MCI, Sprint, and others.
