- In 1943, I joined the United States Naval Reserve and was assigned to Harvard University's Cruft Laboratories, where I became the first programmer for the Navy's Mark I computer.

- I am credited with developing the first compiler and published the first paper on compilers in 1952.

- I returned to active duty in the Navy in 1967 and eventually held the rank of Rear Admiral.

- The New York Times says I may be remembered most for saying "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission".
