HiP7 and HiP8

HiP7 and HiP8 are abbreviations for two versions of HiPerMOS, a complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor ( CMOS ) microchip technology invented by Motorola.

HiP7 chips feature a line width of 0.13 micrometer or micron (one micron is equal to 10 -6 meter ). The newer HiP8 devices have line widths 30 percent narrower, approximately 0.1 micron. These widths are microscopic -- comparable to the wavelength s of electromagnetic radiation at the ultraviolet ( UV ) wavelengths. This makes possible a significant reduction in chip size compared with previous technologies. Designs are currently being contemplated that will feature line widths as narrow as 0.07 micron, or 70 nanometers (one nanometer is equal to 10 -9 meter).

HiP7 and HiP8 devices are used in analog, digital, and mixed-signal communications systems. In addition, HiP7 and HiP8 technology can be used in the manufacture of microprocessors and nonvolatile memory chips. Microprocessors using this technology are noted for low power consumption, as well as support for third-party designs, embedded processing , and multiple processing cores. This technology also makes possible the so-called system-on-a-chip computer.
