SeniorNet

SeniorNet is a non-profit organization that provides online education about technology and the Internet for people who are 50 or older. In the 1980s, Mary Furlong, an education professor at the University of San Francisco, conducted research into the benefits that online services might provide for older people. The result was SeniorNet, one of the earliest uses of the Internet for the general public.

SeniorNet offers a range of services. Members can chat with other members, post messages on bulletin boards, download programs and data, and join special-interest discussion groups. There are SeniorNet learning centers all over the world. They offer classes and general technical assistance. Special attention is provided for people with physical limitations.

SeniorNet publishes books of interest to older computer users. Much of the material for these publications comes from the members' experiences. SeniorNet conventions are held periodically, where members can meet with computer experts and industry executives. Workshops are given in various subjects and at all experience levels.
