XyWrite

XyWrite was a text editor from XYQuest that gained a following in the 1980s. Although XyWrite is still used by a few people, it has been almost entirely superseded by other text editors or word processor s. Initially developed to run under Microsoft's Disk Operating System ( MS-DOS ), XyWrite was popular in computers before the advent of the graphical user interface ( GUI ). A Windows-based version was developed when computer users switched to the GUI, but this version enjoyed limited popularity.

XyWrite encoded typesetting commands as ASCII -encoded character groups enclosed within angle brackets. A document written in XyWrite and read by a Windows-based word processor appears with all the typesetting commands expanded and visible. When a document written in XyWrite is viewed with the XyWrite program, however, the functions are hidden so that they appear as characters in different colors. The operator can choose the color to represent each typeface. Plain text is usually white, but italics may be red, underlined characters may be green, bold characters may be blue, and so on.

The Nota Bene word processor, intended especially for use with academic papers and bibliographies, is said to be based on XyWrite.
