Microsoft Managed Desktop (MMD)

Microsoft Managed Desktop (MMD) is a subscription-based desktop as a service (DaaS) cloud platform that includes Windows 10 Enterprise, Office 365, Enterprise Mobility and Security on select Windows PCs and Windows 10-enabled devices. As the name suggests, Microsoft manages the systems.

Microsoft offers preconfigured hardware with software security and feature updates that the company manages for a monthly fee. According to the company, the subscription-based combination of hardware and managed software means enterprises can run their typical operations without IT ever having to touch the hardware.

With Microsoft managing most cloud systems, the company will be able to provide 24/7 security and desktop support. MMD will also be able to provide cloud-driven analytics, which could help organizations gain insight on how to better monitor and manage their devices.

Initially, MMD will only be available on Microsoft Surface devices. Devices from Dell, HP and other manufacturers whose devices meet Microsoft’s MMD specifications and runtime quality standards will follow.

In 2018, Microsoft started testing the services with a trial in the United Kingdom and the United States. Expansion of the service into Australia, Canada and New Zealand is set for early 2019. Other regions have availability for MMD starting in the second half of 2019.
