National Data Warehouse of Official Statistics

The National Data Warehouse of Official Statistics (NDWOS) is a central repository of the statistical data gathered by India’s central ministries, state governments and union territories. By integrating otherwise disparate data sets, the National data warehouse allows researchers and policy makers to view historical data sets the same way and extract data across different groups.

The Computer Centre in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is responsible for collecting data from India’s various government organizations and storing it in the data warehouse. Registered users access the National Data Warehouse of Official Statistics over the Internet. There are two levels of access. At level 1, users have free access to all metadata, reports and pre-formatted tables. At level 2, users can generate dynamic tables and data cubes.

In 1999 the Government of India mandated the creation of the National Data Warehouse to hold all of the country’s statistical data. Databases in the data warehouse include Household Consumer Expenditure, Employment and Unemployment, Annual Survey of Industries, Economic Census and Survey on Disability. Up until 1999, there was no central repository and the collection, processing, production, dissemination and archiving of data was decentralized within each organization. In addition to complicating data analytics, decentralization made it difficult to establish common standards for metadata, data layout and data access policies. The National Data Warehouse seeks to resolve those problems by promoting standards for integrating new databases into the data warehouse.
