Part of the Healthcare IT glossary:

VistA EHR, more formally known as the VistA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), is an open source electronic health record (EHR ) system developed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Next Steps

The record system is part of the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), the government agency's healthcare network. VistA provides a client/server interface for health care providers to review and update a patient’s electronic medical record. VistA is one of the largest healthcare networks in the world and the CPRS electronic health care record system is one of its most well-known components.

The records system, which supports Health Level 7 International (HL7) standards for health information exchange (HIE), is used in both hospital, ambulatory and long-term care settings. It includes modules for computerized physician order entry (CPOE), laboratory tests, MRIs, patient care diet orders, e-prescribing and other clinical documentation, but does not include modules for billing because VA health care is free for veterans who qualify for medial services.

In 1997, the Veteran's Administration released the source code for VistA under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Since that time, many EHR providers -- most notably Medsphere Systems Corporation --  have used VistA source code to create commercial versions of the Computerized Patient Electronic System. Medsphere's commercial product is sold under the name "OpenVistA."
