Linus Torvalds is credited with developing this Unix-like operating system at the University of Helsinki, Finland back in the early 1990s. Unlike Windows and other proprietary systems, Linux -- which stands for Linus' Unix -- is publicly open and extendible by contributors. Although the operating system is open source, companies can still generate revenue with Linux by developing the OS for specific applications and by selling support services.
