FORTRAN file
The F file extension typically refers to text files containing source code written in the Fortran programming language. It is the same as the FOR file extension, but F90 is now more commonly used. Such text files need to be preprocessed before being passed to the Fortran compiler. Fortran was developed by IBM in the 1950s; the name was originally an acronym, FORTRAN, derived from IBM Mathematical FORmula TRANslating System. It’s a general-purpose, procedural, imperative programming language typically used for numeric computation and scientific computing. The F file extension is also used with Unix file archives compressed with the “freeze” file compression program.
