OCR File Format
Transcribed fax-to-text file (FAXGrabber)
The OCR file extension is associated with the now-defunct application FAXGrapper, which stored received fax documents and converted them to plain text with OCR (optical character recognition) technology. Optical character recognition works by scanning text character-by-character, analysing the resulting image, and then translating the character image into character codes, such as ASCII, which are commonly used in data processing. Current text editing software, such as Apple TextEdit and Microsoft Notepad, can open .OCR files, as can Nuance OmniPage Pro X and Nuance OmniPage 17, which are document imaging applications for Mac OS X and Windows, respectively.
