VIR File Format

File identified as a virus-infected file by Norton AntiVirus and possibly others

The VIR file extension is primarily associated with virus-infected files that have been detected as such by an anti-virus program. Upon detection, the anti-virus program appends .vir to the file extension associated with the infected file as a means of identifying that the file is infected. The appended .vir extension also prevents the file from being opened by the user.

Symantec Norton AntiVirus uses the VIR extension and can open the file, as can Avira AntiVir. Removing the .vir extension will make it possible to open the file but is also likely to execute the virus. For that reason, it is not advisable to open a file with the .vir extension manually. Let the anti-virus program deal with it.
