WMV is a file extension for a Microsoft Windows video compression file format. WMV stands for Windows Media Video.

WMV files require versions 8 and later of the Windows Media Player (WMP). In addition to WMV, WMP uses WMA and ASF file formats to encode audio and video downloaded from the Internet or ripped from compact discs or other storage media. Recent versions of WMP can also synchronize with some non-Microsoft media players.
