Genealogical data (GEDCOM)
GED is a file extension for a family history file used by GEDCOM. GED stands for GEnealogical Data. As the name implies, it contains Genealogical Data used when creating a family history. GED files can be opened by GEDCOM compatible software. GEDCOM is both family history software and a specification for storing genealogical data used with a multitude of family history software suites. GED files are typically contain ASCII data.
The GED file extension is also used for Graphic Environment Document drawing files and EnerGraphics Graphics editor files.
