Emulator ROMS for game console (Nintendo)

NES is a file extension for a video game emulator ROM file extracted from a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) cartridge-based home video game console.

ROM stands for Read Only Memory and is an accurate description, as cartridges generally could not be written to. A ROM file is only usable on an emulator for the system that the game originated from.
