Shape entities (AutoCAD)
![]()
SHX is a file extension for a compiled shape entities file format used by AutoDesks’ AutoCAD. AutoCAD is the most popular Computer-Aided Design (CAD) program used in architectural and engineering design.
An SHX file is the compiled machine code version of an SHP ASCII-based shape entities file, which means that programs can process SHX files much more quickly. All of the vector based fonts in AutoCAD, for example, are SHX files.
The SHX file extension is also associated with the Shapefile spatial index file (ArcView).
