SPL File Format

Object file (ShockWave Flash)

The SPL file extension was appended to files created with FutureSplash Animator, which was the predecessor to Flash. FutureSplash Animator was developed by FutureWave Software, which was purchased by Macromedia in December 1996. Macromedia turned FutureSplash Animator into Macromedia Flash, which was renamed Adobe Flash when Adobe purchased Macromedia in 2005. Currently, Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Flash CS5 can open .SPL files.

The .SPL extension is also used with print spool files generated by Windows NT and 2000. Files with the .SPL extension are used to communicate drawing commands.

MIME type: application/futuresplash, application/x-futuresplash
