TGA is a file extension for a raster graphics file created by TrueVision Inc. TGA stands for Truevision Graphics Adapter. Also referred to as TARGA, which stands for Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter.
TARGA was the first family of video cards for IBM Compatible PCs that supported TrueColor display, which had been intended for use with professional image and video editing. When it launched, it represented the state-of-the-art in digital image editing. TGA is still used extensively throughout several industries because its intended outputs are standard TV screens. TGA files can be opened by most image editing software, from Microsoft Paint to Adobe Photoshop.
