Music module (MOD) (Fast Tracker 2)
The XM file extension is primarily associated with music module audio files that were introduced by Fast Tracker 2 from Triton. An XM file is in a proprietary format that is similar to a MOD file. XM stands for "extended module."
Fast Tracker 2 is no longer being developed but XM files are supported by a number of players including Milkytracker and VideoLAN VLC media player, as well as CocoModX, Cog and Player Pro for the Macintosh OS and XMPlay, Nullsoft Winamp Media Player, Sonique, MODPlug Tracker and FMJ-Software Awave Studio for Windows.
