Tizen is an open source operating system built on the Linux kernel and offered in versions for multiple mobile and embedded platforms, including smartphones, tablets, wearable computers, netbooks, smart TVs and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.
The OS is designed to provide a consistent user experience across devices. The current Tizen profiles are Tizen IVI (in-vehicle infotainment), Tizen Mobile, Tizen TV, and Tizen Wearable. All versions since Tizen 3.0 are based on a common, shared infrastructure called Tizen Common.
Multi-platform Oses like Tizen help to simplify the production of software by eliminating the need for redundant coding of applications for multiple platforms. With Windows 10, Microsoft has taken a similar approach with universal apps that work across smartphones, wearables, tablets and desktops through common APIs.
Tizen apps are all coded in HTML5. Making HTML5 its native language negates any need for a native code container to support a device’s advanced sensors and functions. Developers familiar with coding HTML5 can use the same tools used to build websites and web apps to build applications running on Web-centric operating systems, like Tizen and WebOS. Using an already familiar language also makes the new system available as a new market to an existing pool of developers.
Samsung Tizen was one of the first commercial implementations of the OS.
