Exomedicine is the study of medicine-related science in Earth orbit's micro-gravity. The experimentation and study of cells, systems and organisms without the effects of Earth's gravity promotes new found understanding of biological sciences.
Exomedicine is a frontier started almost along with space travel. Since the first Russian and U.S. space station was put in orbit, scientific experimentation and study has been part of the journey. Russia launched their first space station, Salyut 1 in 1971, conducting experimentation of a mostly of military and classified nature. With the U.S. launch of Skylab the first general purpose micro-gravity lab was created. Among other experiments biological systems were studied in micro-gravity in order to better understand the effects that gravity has on these systems back on earth.
More recently, along with some of the SpaceX launches, the components of a microgravity lab from the company Space Tango have been included in the cargo. Now, Tango Lab is offering the first space as a service in order to offer the ability to conduct micro-gravity experiments. It was after a meeting between Space Tango and Barry Blumberg , the discoverer of the hepatitis b virus and creator of the countering vaccine, that the term exomedicine was coined.
